Application and Interview Process

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship receives over 600 applications each year for our four (4) fellowship positions. We accept all applicants who match with our program through the Medical Specialties Matching Program under the aegis of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

On this webpage, we provide an outline of the steps involved in completing an application to our program as well as a description of our interview process. Please read the instructions carefully and be certain you understand them thoroughly so that your application will be considered complete, as only completed applications will be reviewed for interview consideration.

How to Apply

Please follow the application steps sequentially, paying close attention to deadlines.

Application Step 1 – Ensure that you meet the East Carolina University/ECU Health Medical Center Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program-specific requirements. No exceptions will be made to the minimum requirements, which are as follows:

  • You must have completed, or be on track to complete, an ACGME-approved residency in internal medicine prior to the anticipated start date of the fellowship training program.
  • If you are not a US citizen or a permanent resident of the United States, you must hold a J-1 visa, as ECU Health Medical Center residency and fellowship programs can only accept the J-1 visa.
  • Upon Matching to our Program you must be able to obtain a North Carolina Medical License, if you do not currently have one. Our institutional Graduate Medical Education office will assist you with this process. Please visit the North Carolina Medical Board’s website ncmedboard.org for more details.

Application Step 2 – Be certain that you have completed the ERAS® application.

We accept applications and supporting documents through ERAS® only. For information about applying to a fellowship with ERAS®, please visit students-residents.aamc.org.

Important notice regarding the fellowship program application deadline: Applications which are not both completed and submitted on or before August 1st will not be reviewed. We encourage you to begin completing the application and uploading supporting documents such as the required letters of reference on July 1st when ERAS® opens to applicants, to ensure that you meet the August 1st deadline.

A completed ERAS® application contains all of the following documents:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation, all dated no more than six (6) months prior to date of application, including one from your current or most recent program director
  • Personal statement
  • Medical school transcript
  • Medical student performance evaluation (MSPE) / Dean’s Letter
  • USMLE transcript listing scores for Steps 1, 2 (CK and CS) and 3 or
  • COMPLEX transcript listing scores for Level 1, 2-CE, 2-PE and 3
  • ECFMG certification, if applicable

You will be considered to have completed the application process once you have finished Application Steps 1 and 2. Your application will then be reviewed and a decision made regarding whether you are one of the candidates selected to interview.

Important notice regarding the status of your fellowship application: Candidates will be notified of the status of their application only through the ERAS® communication portal. Due to the number of applications received each year, it is not feasible for the fellowship program to respond to phone or email inquiries regarding application status; therefore, no reply to such inquiries will be provided.
