Inpatient Critical Care Cardiology Curriculum

The critical cardiology rotation offers our cardiology fellows a fulfilling clinical and academic experience. Fellows will rotate in our state of the art CCU and participate in caring for our complex cardiac patients.

The advanced heart failure team manages patients with post-MI shock, low-flow cardiac failure, pulmonary hypertension crisis, and decompensated right heart failure. Fellows work closely with the advanced heart failure cardiologists to manage patients with cardiogenic shock requiring inotropic and percutaneous mechanical circulatory support.

The cardiology fellow is in charge of management of invasive hemodynamic monitoring including PA catheter insertion, troubleshooting, and hemodynamic-guided therapy. Fellows have access to hands-on experience with percutaneous mechanical circulatory support with IABP and Impella. Furthermore, the rotating fellow will have the opportunity to care for patients with profound cardiogenic shock requiring extracorporeal life support such as ECMO and Centrimag.

The advanced heart failure service provides detailed evaluation of candidacy for advanced heart failure surgical therapies in patients with profound cardiogenic shock. The heart failure program is in charge of the medical and perioperative management of patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs).

Advanced heart failure cardiologists provide didactic lectures covering basic and clinical topics in advanced heart failure, invasive hemodynamics, cardiogenic shock, and percutaneous mechanical circulatory support.
